CHEF’s ERU team successfully distributed 5th distribution of food to another 55 families in Shinkay Village. This completes the total food distribution to 255 flood affected families of Village Cheena & Shinkay in the month of August, 2010 through a total of five distribution trips.

School Screening arranged by CVC and Eye Hospital Takhtbhai in District Mardan

Takhtbai Eye Clinic and Eye Hospital jointly starts school screening programme in Centre for Speech and Hearing School Mardan on 30, March 2010. The main aim of school screening programme is to check each & every school going child for refractive errors and other eye diseases like Amblyopia and educate them about the prevention and cure. The children of 2nd 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class were screened. A Total of 210 students (112Girls and 98 Boys) were screened for refractive error, Squint and other eye pathology. Where 210 students were given health and eye education, and 22 children have been referred to Takhtbai Eye hospital for spectacles and further eye examination.

Swabi Eye Care Center performed a Free Eye Camp on 30th March 2010 for the residents of Swabi Village Muhalla Khala village located at a distance of 22 km from Eye Care Center. A total of 180 patients (85 Females and 95 Males) were screened for Refractive error, Cataract and other Eye Pathology. Where 185 people were given health and Eye Education and 12 patients has referred to CVC for spectacles. In Free Eye Camp Free Reading glasses and Eye Drops were also distributed.

Launching Ceremony of Frontier Disability Forum “FDF”

On 09th March 2010, Chairman board of directors CHEF International, Prof. Muhammad Daud Khan welcomed all the participants including Ophthalmologists, Persons with Disabilities (PWD’s), Deputy Comissioner Officer, Minister Provincial Assembly Mr. Ateef ur Rehman, DG health NWFP and all other dignitaries from different areas of Pakistan for sparing time not only to participate in the launching ceremony of Frontier Disability Froum(FDF) but also shown their concern with PWDs. The basic aim to create such a forum is to see different problems faced by persons with cross disability considering both official and domestic needs in the society. Dr. Shahnawz Manager Comprehensive Disabilities Program CHEF International shared the importance of the day and need for establishing a proper platform to recognize, manage and streamline all the PWDs activities in Pakistan as a general and particularly in NWFP.

Peshawar Eye Care Center performed a Free Eye Camp on Sunday 28th March 2010 for the residents of Jamroz Hujra Village, Abdara, PESHAWAR. The village is located at a distance of 15km from Eye Care Center. A total of 258 patients (138 Females and 120 Males) were screened for Refractive error, Cataract and other Eye Pathology. Where 265 people were given health and Eye Education and 65 patients were referred to CVC for Spectacles. SWABI Eye Care Center performed a Free Eye Camp on Thursday11th March 2010 for the residents of village Maniri Bala, SWABI located at a distance of 29 km from Eye Care Center. A total of 220 patients (118 Females and 102 Males) were screened for Refractive error, Cataract and other Eye Pathology. Where 226 people were given health and Eye Education and 39 patients were referred to CVC for Spectacles. Takhkbahi Eye Care Center and Eye Hospital Takhtbhai performed a Free Eye Camp at Al-Ibadat Kherati Hospital on Monday 29 March 2010 for the residents of MARDAN. A total of 167 patients (88 Females and 14 Males) were screened for Refractive error, Cataract and other Eye Pathology. Where 169 people were given health and Eye Education and 42 patients were referred to CVC for Spectacles. Free Reading glasses and Eye Drops were distributed in all free eye camps. Free Eye Camps have achieved the aim by imparting Health Education, creating awareness about health and eye care.

The inaugural planning meeting of the National Task force on Hearing Care was held in collaboration with CHEF-International, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Welfare and Special Education, CBM and World Wide Hearing, Geneva, at Hotel Margala Islamabad from 25th -27th February 2010. Pakistan is the first country to launch Audio 2020; a global initiative to reduce the burden of hearing loss in developing countries in collaboration with WHO and in line with United Nations Millennium Development Goals. In the inaugural meeting of Audio 2020 Pakistan, a five year NATIONAL PLAN for hearing care was formulated with the expert input of all the stakeholders. Key speakers included Director General Ministry of health, Country Representative WHO Dr Khalif Bile, Chairman CHEF International, Senior medical advisor of CBM, the Chairman and Secretary, of World Wide Hearing, Geneva, Director Ministry of special education and social welfare. Participants of the planning meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Welfare and special education, Audiologists, Speech therapists, Deaf People organizations, ENT surgeons, Adminsitartors, International expert on hearing care and Non Governmental Developmental and intergovernmental Organizations.

Islamia scientific academy was our 3rd school in which we screened children of class 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th. The Team of Disability Programmes under the chairmanship of Dr. Shahnawaz Munami (Manager Disability Programmes), Mr. Shehab Ali (Senior Programme Officer) Inclusive Education Programme, Skardu arranged one week training in Physiotherapy on 25th may to 30th May, 09 at Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar for the Community mobilizers from CHIP working in Skardu. This training consisted of lectures as well hands on training visits to different centres in Peshawar. The participants were Community Mobilizers from Skardu.

Three organizations for the first time CHEF Int’l, CHIP and Directorate General of Special Education Islamabad, Government of Pakistan jointly hold a seminar as an effort towards advocacy and sensitization about Inclusive Education system for the community of Skardu. CHEF taking the leading role arranged this seminar with the support of CHIP at Skardu and Directorate General of Special Education providing the technical support. This seminar holds the banner of high success as far as the advocacy and sensitization of the people from the different communities in Skardu.

On 15th June, 09 General Health Care Unit was launched in the premises of Social Security Hospital, Takhtbai by CHEF Intl.Catering to the general health needs of approx 8000 IDPs who have taken refuge in the surrounding areas. The unit is providing 24 hours service with a Medical Officer in the morning and a qualified dispenser at night. Till date 1300 patients have been treated .

Last month At the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology Bahrain, March 27-28, 2009, Dr. Muhammad Babar Qureshi was awarded the prestigious Prince Abdul Aziz Ahmad Al Saud Prevention of Blindness Award for his contribution towards the prevention of blindness in the developing world.
