
Student of class V, Institute for Blind Girls, Peshawar
Nahid, a student of class V of the Government Institute for Blind Girls, Peshawar comes from a poor family of Shakar Dara, Swat. She was admitted at the institute six years back when she was 13 years of age.
Her father is a laborer at Saudi Arabia for the past 20 years. Nahid is the third child of her parents, besides her five brothers, and two sisters. One of her brothers is completely blind while the other is partial blind (Low vision patient).
The blind (Habib Ullah) being the eldest brother has completed his intermediate education and is also completed Islamic studies. He is now searching for job to live an independent life.
The third brother (Fazal Rahim) is partial blind and has completed metric from the Institute for the Blind, Mingora, Swat and is now working as a plumber, he is comparatively better than the elder brother as he is earning something and contributing to their family welfare.
According to Nahid, herself and the family members, she has gained a lot while being at the Institute for Blind Girls. The most remarkable is the confidence that is built in her. Before joining the institute, she had to seek others help during her routine life. But now she has been able to move and work independently. According to Nahid, she gained a lot from O&M and ADL trainings at the Institute.
When she was visited at her home, she not only cooked the food for us by herself but she also served it and the most important thing was that the food was excellent. According to her mother, she very actively participates in the home activities like cooking, dusting and even taking care of milking the buffalo.
Nahid’s mother was very happy with the vocational training that is being provided at the institute. She said the best is knitting and computer operation as these both would help her getting a reasonable job so that she could live independently.
Nahid is very much willing to continue her studies and she and her family demanded for the enhancement of the level of education at the Institute for Blind Girls.
Her family believed that the Institute for Blind Girls is a blessing for their daughter as it has improved her life to a great extent.
Teachers’ Views:
According to the teachers of the Institute, Nahid is one of the best students of the institute. She is a very good student both in academics as well as the vocational training. She is now able to train the newly enrolled students at Telephoen Operation and also she can teach Holy Quran to the students in brail.
Principal’s Views:
The principal of the institute is very happy with Nahid. She expressed her views as “Nahid comes from a respectable family, she knows how to deal with elders, teachers and other stuents”, she further said that Nahid has all the abilities to learn and to pass on whatever she learns and for this reason she is made supervisor at the dormitory and she takes care of the younger girls at the hostel.
